I regularly get overwhelmed by grocery stores. There’s something about the fifty million different flavors of Oreos that sparks my decision anxiety. But alas, it’s a necessary part of this whole “living” thing. So let me save you some stress and break down the dairy dessert situation for you a bit.

The other day, quite in a panic, I picked up these pots de crème from my local Publix. Y’all, my life has been changed. The brand is PetitPot and while I initially picked them up for the adorable glass jar, I stayed for the taste. These things put American pudding products to shame.

What even is a pot de crème?

Pot de crème is a French dessert that originated in the 1700’s. It’s popular both for its decadent taste and the cute little serving cup it comes in. Most Americans are perhaps more familiar pot de crème’s close relative, crème brûlée. Essentially if you take the tasty burnt sugar part off the crème brûlée, you find the delicious custard of a pot de crème underneath.

Pictured above are PetitPot’s vanilla bean and dark chocolate flavors seen here with a croissant. Americans, welcome to the French lifestyle of dessert decadence.

So how do they taste?

Imagine that your favorite flavor of pudding had a baby with a rich, creamy custard. The consistency is the stuff dreams are made of- thick and decadent. But perhaps best of all, PetitPot’s products aren’t too sweet. There’s a real flavor here, not just a bunch of corn syrup. PetitPot has a number of flavors but I stuck with the Vanilla Bean for my initial taste test. These, as Ina Garten would say, are made with “good vanilla”- you can see the little brown flecks even. I’ve since tried out their chocolate as well and have to report back similar levels of satisfaction.

PetitPot is the Sweetest Brand

I have to give a special shout-out to PetitPot too. These days I think I’m not alone in wanting to appreciate not just the product but the brands that provide them, and PetitPot folks are kind warm people. Founded in 2014, their founder Maxime simply wanted to share his love for the delicious French treat with an American audience. For what it’s worth, I’m not sponsored to write this post either. I just genuinely appreciate brands that want to share the things they personally love with the world and I think PetitPot does just that.

So if they’re in your stores, try them out! Let me know if you love them. I’ve yet to get my hands on the lemon flavor so I’ll be keeping my eyes out to try that one as well. In the meantime, I’ll be happily growing my collection of cute little glass jars with a smile on my face.
