How To Blow Up on TikTok this Summer

TikTok is blowing up. Are you ready to leave platforms of the past behind?

TikTok is by far my favorite social media platform. And I’m not alone, the social media giant is growing at an alarming rate. In January of 2022, over a billion other TikTokers logged in to learn, grow, and, connect on the app. TikTok is no longer a place for just dance trends and quick clips. It is quickly becoming a real threat to giants like YouTube and Facebook.

Now, I’m not a big creator. I’m not a trendy Gen Z influencer. I’m a middle-aged mom of two whose biggest flexes are that I’ve unpacked my trauma and mastered sourdough bread. Despite this, I have had some recent success. After tirelessly trying different strategies, my channel has finally started to have some success. (It would have more if you follow me so go do that now and come back).

So without further ado, here’s how I got hot on TikTok in June of 2022. I mention the date because the app is constantly changing, and I hope to write more as I continue to adjust my strategy.

Get Native

The first step to any social media strategy is to get truly native to the platform. This is your permission to scroll, scroll away. You have to truly get immersed in the platform if you have any hope of making content that’s meaningful. Follow people you’re into. Like and comment on posts you love. Truly consider scrolling your market research and commit to doing it every day. When you’re feeling comfortable with the functionality, start getting curious and ask yourself:

  • What do I like about my favorite creators?
  • What do my favorite creator’s pages look like?
  • When do I scroll away quickly? What makes me stay?

The answers to these questions are your guidelines for how you’re going to develop your channel. Your fyp (“for you page” in TikTok lingo) will look different than mine and it’s important you create content that YOU would want to watch first and foremost.

Ignore The Rules

When you’re trying to grow your TikTok channel, the algorithm will pick up really quickly that you’re trying to do that. Your fyp will be flooded with “trending audios” and “great hook ideas”. It’s not like those videos…
